Breast Reduction

The plastic surgery technique for reducing the size of large breasts is ‘Reduction Mammoplasty’. Large breasts cause many problems of heaviness of the chest, difficulty in maintaining hygiene in the infra-mammary area, discomfort in shoulder from bra straps, and can be a social embarrassment. The crucial corrective consideration in breast reduction surgery is to re-establish a bust proportionate to the female body and relocate the nipple-areolar complex. There are many surgical techniques to reduce the breast size and the procedure is chosen after proper consideration. Generally, females don’t lactate / or lactate enough for feeding a baby because most of the milk glands have to be removed by surgery. However, sensitivity of the breast and the nipple-areolar complex is regained swiftly.

The surgery can take 4 hours and the convalescent period is 10 days. This procedure requires general anaesthesia. If the breasts are extremely large the nipple-areolar complex is not relocated but planted as a free graft on the reduced breast mound. A couple of drains may be placed after surgery to suck out the blood that may ooze in the post-operative period.

After surgery the breast are heavily bandaged to provide support.
